I've been a musician since the age of 12, when I wrote my first song, “The King and Queen Card’s Son”, and it was in the 5th grade that my teacher, Mr. Chatfield, read a book outloud to our class; one chapter each week. The book was called, “Houdini”.
I decided then that I would grow up to be a stage magician one day, and in 1980 I began the magic career that would be my greatest joy for the next 40 years and allow me to visit 60 countries to share my craft.
Mr. Chatfield also introduced me to music.
I vividly recall when he taught us musical counterpoint; how layers of harmonic passages can be combined over each other to add incredible depth to music. It was another kind of magic, and I was immediately astounded by the richness it offered.
Along the way I played my banjo.
In my lifetime I have been a part of 11 different musical groups, all of them duos or trios.
Our group names are an interesting blueprint of my musical past.:
12 Fluid Ounces.
Barnes and Chrysler
The Cherry Brothers
Kate and the Kowboyz
A cancer diagnosis in 2014, the Covid outbreak and drifting into my life as a 70 year old helped me to ease out of my magic career, but the music never stopped, at least in my heart. Not long after my 72nd birthday I decided to get back to work –this time as a solo performer.
Today my purpose and my drive is to bring music to men and women like me. Seniors.
And I’ve brought my understanding of life in its final phase to create a program this is both spontaneous and interactive. I didn’t want to be just a guy delivering songs. I wanted to share moments, and memories and magic with my audiences.
My ONE MAN BANJO BAND is really about living our best years as seniors—right now and together.
It’s a musical celebration of our lives.
I look forward to entertaining—and meeting—your group.
